Italy is one country where beauty is prized more than any other virtue.

이탈리아는 아름다움이 그 어떤 미덕보다 높이 평가받는 한 나라이다.



That is, except in the small town of Piobbico, the self-proclaimed World Capital of Ugly People.

못생긴 사람들의 세계적 수도라고 스스로 선언한 피오비코라는 작은 마을은 제외한다.



The road sign at the edge of the town even warns visitors that they are entering the ugly zone.

마을 외곽의 도로 표지판조차 못생긴 사람들의 지역에 들어가고있다고 방문자들에게 경고한다.



People who consider themselves ugly have been gathering in Piobbico since the 1960s.

1960년대 이후로 스스로 못생겼다고 생각하는 사람들은 피오비코에 모여들었다.



That`s when Ugly Club president Telesforo Iacobelli established a dating agency for women who believed they were too ugly to attract husbands.

그때가 못난이 클럽의 회장인 Telesforo Iacobelli 가 너무 못생겨서 남편깜을 꼬시지 못한다고 믿었던 여자들을 위한 데이트 대행업체를 설립한 때이다.



Iacobelli believes that he is ugly himself because he has a short nose have always been considered beautiful. (살짝 이상한듯...)

Iacobelli는 짧은 코를 갓고있었기 때문에 그 자신을 못난이라고 믿었고, 항상 아름다움을 신경써왔었다.



People from around the world travel to Piobbico to tell their sad stories of ugliness.

세계 각처에서 온 사람들은 그들의 추함에 관한 슬픈 이야기를 말하기 위해서 피오비코로 여행을 한다.



During the annual Festival of the Ugly, which occurs on the first Sunday of every September, hundreds of people gather in Piobbico`s town square to elect the president of the Ugly Club.

매 9월 첫번째 일요일에 열리는 못난이 연례축제 동안에, 사람들은 못난이 클럽의 회장을 뽑기위해 피오비코의 마을 광장에 모인다.



Iacobelli wins the election every year.

Iacobelli는 매년 선거에서 이긴다.



The Ugly Club has over 20,000 members.

못난이 클럽에는 2만명이 넘는 회원이 있다.



They carry ID cards that grade their ugliness from bearable to extreme.

그들은 봐줄만한 상태 부터 궁극의 추함까지 그들의 추함을 등급매겨둔 ID 카드를 단다.



A prize is awarded to Ugly Club members who qualify as extremely ugly.

상은 궁극의 추함으로 인정받는 못난이 클럽의 회원에게 수여된다.




The Ugly Club president insists that ugliness is a virtue.

못난이 클럽의 회장은 추함은 미덕이다라고 주장한다.



Since beautiful people get a lot of attention for their beauty alone, they have to work hard to prove their other virtues.

아름다운 사람들이 그들의 아름다움 하나로 많은 관심을 얻었기 때문에 그들은 그들의 다른 미덕을 증명하기 위해 열심이 일해야 한다.



Ugly people, on the other hand, are genuine and don`t have to prove anything to Iacobelli.

반면에 못난 사람들은 성실하고  Iacobelli에게 그 어떤것도 증명할 필요가 없다.




Iacobelli is a spokesperson for ugly people everywhere.

Iacobelli 는 모든곳의 못난이들을 위한 대변인이다.



He believes that th uglier one is, the better life can be.

그는 더 못생긴 사람이 더 나은 인생이 될 수 있다고 믿는다.(뭔가 이상하져?;;;)



Though the club enjoys making fun of beauty contests, Iacobelli has a serious side as well.

(못난이)클럽이 미인대회를 조롱하는것을 즐기기는 하지만,  Iacobelli는 또한 심각한 면을 갖고있다.



He believes that too many people suffer from financial and emotional pressures because they don`t meet society`s standards of beauty.

그는 너무나도 많은 사람들이 사회의 미적기준을 만족시킬수 없기 때문에 재정상 또 감정적 압박감으로부터 고통을 받는다고 믿는다.



The fact that beautiful people are more successful in the workforce is a problem that Iacobelli has attempted to bring forward to the Italian public and government.

아름다운 사람들이 작업능력에서 더 성공적이라는 사실은  Iacobelli가 이탈리아 대중과 정부에게 불러일으키려 시도했던 문제이다.
